The Ziebel fiber optics downhole sensor is a result of a several years development program for high reliability permanent deployment in wellbores as well as for intervention logging. The fiber optic sensors are immune to radio and magnetic interferences and intrinsically safe.

A new fiber optic sensor technology has been developed to obtain pressure and temperature information from inside a wellbore. This new system employs the white light interferometry using extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) with immunity to drift of the light source and fiber loss. EFPI based sensing scheme gives more reliable down-hole pressure and temperature monitoring solution due to its ‘air cavity’. Pressure sensor has intrinsically very low temperature cross-sensitivity, and excellent linearity in measurement. Employing a novel robust demodulation algorithm, and a new sensor packaging technique, a low cost, accurate, repeatable downhole sensing has been possible.

Ziebel is based on the technologies, experience and competence since 1985 in permanent downhole monitoring. The management group of the Reservoir Monitoring Group have provided and installed close to 1000 downhole gauge systems, ranging from single sensor installations to world record subsea systems with up to 132 sensors in a wellbore. We have developed and installed electronic as well as fiber optic gauge system.

We have also developed a fiber optic motion verification tool that we are currently testing out with our ZipLog optical downhole logging system. This tool monitor that the “bullnose” in the lower end of our optical well logging system is actually moving during logging string insertion into the well, where this will prevent the surface injector system from pushing the spoolable semi-stiff carbon rod into well unless also the “bullnose” is moving downwards.
